This morning I found a delightful little book on my desk. It's called "My head covering is downright Sikh," a forthright, simple and sincerely written (and drawn) illustrated introduction to Sikh turbans. Within its lovely little 21 pages lie the stories of contemporary Sikhs and their turbans. By using some examples of more well-known Sikhs like the centenarion marathon runner Fauja Singh and the prime minister of India, Manmohan Singh (whom he slyly calls "M&M Singh") he creates associations between Sikhs and their turbans that will be easily remembered by his readers.
This is a perfect book for those you might want to introduce to the distinctly Sikh turban - perfect for school children and adults alike. It would be at home in school, in a class on religions, or might serve as a great gift for a Sikh friend or a non-Sikh friend.
Vishavjit's deft drawing style is familiar to those who have seen his work on the web or in exhibitions. Although many of his cartoons are political, and he does have a biting edge of satire in his political cartoons, the drawings in this book have an innocence and simplicity that will appeal to everyone. Although he does include one turban-wearing Kaur in the book (his own lovely wife) I would have liked to have seen a few more women within these pages.
If you haven't yet familiarized yourself with his work, head on over to SikhToons and spend a while enjoying Vishavjit Singh's unique brand of humor. You won't forget it, and you won't forget this charming little book either.
