Dr. Harbans Lal, a name synonymous with groundbreaking scientific research and profound theological insight, born in 1931 in Haripur, located in the North-West Frontier Province (now in Pakistan), is an internationally recognized pharmacologist and neuroscientist. He is also a distinguished scholar of Sikhism. After earning his B.Sc. degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Punjab University, Chandigarh, India, he migrated to the United States in 1956. There, he completed his Master’s degree at the University of Kansas in 1958 and obtained a Ph.D. in Medical Sciences (Pharmacology) from the University of Chicago in 1962.

Over the years, Dr. Harbans Lal held various academic and research positions at prestigious institutions, including the University of Kansas, the University of Chicago, the IIT Research Institute, and the University of Rhode Island. From 1980 to 2000, he served as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Pharmacology and Neurosciences at the University of North Texas Health Science Center.

In his illustrious career as a pharmacologist and neuroscientist, Dr. Lal has authored over 400 research papers, 28 books on medical research, numerous research reviews, and 56 chapters in books on medical sciences. He has served on numerous national and international advisory boards, including the National Institutes of Health, the National Institute on Aging, the National Science Foundation, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. For 14 years, he was the Editor of the monthly research journal Drug Development Research. The Society recognized his exceptional contributions to neuroscience for Neuroscience, which honoured him with the Distinguished Neuroscientist Award. He was also elected as a member of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology and was included among accomplished scientists recognized for their significant contributions to medicine over the past 50 years. Additionally, the American Psychological Association granted him honorary membership for his contributions to psychological research, a recognition endorsed by B.F. Skinner, the father of behavioural psychology. Dr. Lal also served as President of the Scientists of Indian Origin in America.

Beyond his scientific achievements, Dr. Lal has been a tireless advocate for interfaith and multicultural understanding. He has held leadership roles in various interfaith organizations, such as the World Center for Thanksgiving, the Interfaith Council of Thanksgiving Square, The Faith Conversation, the Alliance for Religious Freedom, and the American Project on Religion in the News Media. He serves as an Ambassador for the Parliament of the World’s Religions. His writings have appeared in both Sikh publications and leading periodicals, including The Dallas Morning News, The Tribune, The Times of India, and The Hindustan Times. For his contributions to interfaith dialogue, he received the Ambassador of Peace Award from the Interreligious and International Federation for World Peace, as well as the International Medal of Honor from Grace Seminary and the International Ummah Award from the Islamic Association.

Dr. Lal has also made significant contributions to Sikh theology and education. He was a founding member of the All-India Sikh Students Federation (AISSF) and served as its President from 1954 to 1956. He also served as Editor-in-Chief of the AISSF’s monthly magazine, Sikh Students’ Bulletin, and was honoured with the title "Bhai Harbans Lal" by the organization. In 1963, he was further honoured with a ceremonial Siropa and Sri Sahib (ceremonial sword) at a conference in the Darbar Sahib complex in Amritsar, earning him the title "Bhai Sahib" within Sikh circles.

Dr. Lal was the Founding Vice President of the Sarab Hind Sehajdhari Sikh Organization (1949–1956) and the Sri Nankana Sahib Foundation (1975–2018), an organization credited with facilitating free access to Sikh historical sites in Pakistan after the partition of India. The Foundation is also recognized for establishing the Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee.

Since 2016, Dr. Lal has been a prolific contributor to Sikh thought through his blog, Seeking Wisdom. His essays, published in reputable journals, magazines, books, and newspapers, have left an indelible mark on his readers. He has authored a book on Guru Nanak’s teachings and numerous reviews on Sikh themes. His work reflects an intellectually rigorous and scientific interpretation of Gurbani, grounded in his dual expertise as a scientist and theologian.

For his services to the Sikh community, Dr. Lal has been honoured by numerous organizations, including the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, Amritsar; the Delhi Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee; The Akal Takht; Takht Hazur Sahib; Takht Sri Patna Sahib; Chief Khalsa Diwan; Sikh Dharma International; and the Sikh Social and Educational Society, Canada. Guru Nanak Dev University awarded him a D.Litt. (Honoris Causa) in 1995, and he received the Nishan-e-Khalsa from the Anandpur Sahib Foundation in 1999. In 2019, the Prof. Sahib Singh Memorial Award was conferred upon him by the Mian Mir Memorial Trust, and in 2023, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Al-Noor International Texas for his outstanding contributions to science and interfaith dialogue.

A widely acclaimed pharmacologist, neuroscientist, and a noted Sikh theologian, Dr. Harbans Lal is a founding member of the School of Scientific and Logical Interpretation of Gurbani. His works embody a commitment to presenting the teachings of Sikh Gurus with intellectual rigor and scientific insight. His unique perspective, shaped by his extensive scientific background, has contributed significantly to a deeper understanding of Sikh philosophy and ethics.
