In the heart of Amritsar stands an institution that embodies selfless service to humanity's most vulnerable. Since 1992, this beacon of hope—the All India Pingalwara Charitable Society—has flourished under the guidance of its Patron-President, Dr. Inderjit Kaur, a physician whose life's mission transcended traditional medicine to embrace a comprehensive vision of healing society's deepest wounds.

From Physician to Humanitarian Leader

Born on January 25, 1942, Dr. Kaur's journey began conventionally enough. After earning her medical degree from Government Medical College, Patiala in 1967, she served five years with Punjab's Directorate of Health Services before establishing private practice. However, her path took a profound turn through her association with Bhagat Puran Singh, the visionary founder of Pingalwara.

Following her father's passing in 1975, Bhagat Puran Singh embraced Dr. Kaur as his daughter. Deeply moved by his dedication to abandoned children, the mentally challenged, and the impoverished, she began emulating his approach to humanitarian service. Recognizing her commitment and capabilities, Bhagat Puran Singh nominated her as his successor in 1986. She served as Vice President from 1988 to 1992 before assuming leadership of the organization.

Expanding the Vision of Pingalwara

Under Dr. Kaur's stewardship, Pingalwara has evolved significantly, addressing contemporary social challenges while remaining true to its founding principles. The organization has broadened its mission to confront emerging issues like AIDS and drug addiction while providing free education to marginalized communities.

Dr. Kaur's leadership has been marked by thoughtful expansion, with new centers established in Sangrur and Palsora. Her particular concern for those with disabilities led to the creation of specialized schools for special education and the hearing impaired, alongside prosthetic and physiotherapy centers for patients in Pingalwara's care.

This expansion reflects not just geographic growth, but a deepening of services tailored to address specific vulnerabilities within society. Each new initiative demonstrates her ability to identify gaps in social support systems and mobilize resources to fill them effectively.

Responding to Crisis with Compassion              Dr. Kaur's humanitarian vision extends well beyond Pingalwara's walls. Under her guidance, the organization has consistently responded to natural disasters and humanitarian crises across India, providing relief to victims of earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, and other calamities.

These relief efforts epitomize her belief that true service transcends geographic boundaries and institutional limitations—that human suffering, wherever it occurs, merits a compassionate response.

Environmental Stewardship

Perhaps the most forward-thinking is Dr. Kaur's recognition of environmental issues as integral to human welfare. She has championed environmental preservation, advocating for natural resource conservation, opposing deforestation, promoting pollution control measures, and supporting natural farming practices.

Through seminars and workshops, Pingalwara raises awareness about these interconnected issues, recognizing that environmental degradation disproportionately affects the vulnerable populations the organization serves.

Recognition and Global Impact

Dr. Kaur's exceptional contributions have garnered numerous accolades, including the prestigious Padma Bhushan Award from the Government of India in 2008. Other significant recognitions include the Mai Bhago Award from the Punjab Government, the National Minorities Rights Award, and international honors such as the Excellence Among Sikhs Trophy from the Sikh Council on Religion and Education in the USA.  Her influence extends to global interfaith dialogue, evidenced by her invitation to the Parliament of World Religions Meet in Barcelona in 2004. In 2005, her dedication to serving humanity's most vulnerable was acknowledged with a formal address in the Canadian Parliament.

A Living Legacy of Service

Dr. Inderjit Kaur's journey from physician to humanitarian leader illustrates how professional expertise, when combined with compassion and vision, can transform institutions and lives. Her leadership of Pingalwara represents a seamless continuation of Bhagat Puran Singh's mission while adapting to contemporary challenges.

Through her work, Dr. Kaur demonstrates that true service addresses immediate needs while simultaneously building sustainable systems of care and working toward a more just society. In an age often characterized by institutional rigidity, her adaptive, responsive approach to humanitarian service offers a powerful model for social change.

As Pingalwara continues its essential work under her guidance, Dr. Inderjit Kaur's legacy stands as testimony to the profound impact one dedicated individual can have when they commit themselves fully to serving humanity's most vulnerable with dignity, compassion, and unwavering dedication.
