This was during the time of Guru Hargobind Ji, the 6th Sikh Guru and in India the Sikhs were being starting to be persecuted. Guru Hargobind knew that it time to prepare an army of saint-soldiers for battle for the defense of the all his Sikhs and of the Dharma. He didn't want to attack anyone, but his Sikhs needed to be able to defend themselves and others if war was declared on them. Guru Hargobind was a beautiful saint and the Sikhs loved him very much. They completely trusted him, saying, "Guru Ji, we are at your feet, you are the True emperor, you are the True King."
Once there was a king who was both good and righteous. He was known far and wide for his wisdom and his kindness to the people of his kingdom. After many years, he began to feel bored with being a king, so he asked his adviser, "How old is my son now? I want him to become king so I can quit this job." The adviser said, "Your son is only 15 years old. The law says he must be 18 years old before he may be crowned as the king." The king said, "No, no no... that is no good at all. I want him to become king now." The adviser said, "You yourself are still a young king. If you were to wait for 3 years, you would still be very young to be retiring from your duties as a king." The king thought this over.
Once a long time ago there was a thief. His father had trained him to be a thief. He was a really good thief because he listened to everything his father taught him about stealing. One thing his father told him was this: "Never listen to anything a saint says. Don't even listen to a single word out of the mouth of a saint. If you hear what saints say, you will not be able to be a thief." He was the best thief around.
A noble King had all his subject do a fast in honor of Vishnu on the day of Ekadasi. There was one man who didn't do the fast though, he was a Sikh of Guru Nanak. "I am constantly fasting. I eat little food and sleep little. I fast from any and all temptation that distract my devotion to God," explained the man. The King was very impressed and wanted very much to meet this Guru. But how would he ever meet this famous saint known as 'Baba Nanak'?
Once there was a king who thought he was the greatest man in the world. His adviser informed him that there was in fact a greater man than him. The king greatly wanted to know who this could possibly be, so they both went out to meet this person. It turned out to be an old man. He was very humble and poor, but he was a man of God. See how the old man taught the king what greatness truly is...
A Sikh of Guru Amar Das ji named Bhai Sachan Sach was very devoted to the Guru. Outside of Goindwal there was a crazy woman who people thought was possessed by demons. Even though this woman had attacked Bhai Sachan Sach, the Guru told him, "Take my sandal, when she attacks you, simply touch her with it." Bhai Sachan Sach at first didn't want to, but he listened to his Guru.... then when he was in the jungle.... she attacked him....
During the time of Maharaja Ranjit Singh there was a famous bandit stealing from people. The Maharaja offered "I will offer two villages to anyone who catches this robber alive." The bandit in return posted his own offer, "If anyone can catch me alive I will give them the throne of Lahore." Along came a brave Singh to battle with the bandit to stop his reign. Will the Singh win and be given the throne of Lahore?
The emperor Jahangir had heard rumors of Guru Hargobind and decided to pay him a visit. He found the Guru to be wise, friendly and brave. Once they were hunting together and a tiger jumped out to attack the emperor. All of his royal soldiers were afraid and didn't do anything. The Guru himself got off his horse and cut the tiger in half, saving the emperors life.
The great Emperor of India, King Akbar, went to go visit the Guru. Guru Amar Das Dev ji wouldn't see the visiting royalty until his guest had eaten in the Guru's langar. So this great ruler of the whole land sat along side all kinds of common people and ate langar. Emperor Akbar was impressed that the Guru served so many people, and was humbled that Guru Amar Das didn't consider anyone higher or lower.
A king with his army visited Guru Gobind Singh ji. The king obviously thought his army was superior to the Guru's so the Guru decided to teach him a kind lesson. Guru ji asked his Sikhs to use themselves as targets to test a new gun he had received. Two Sikhs wanted so much to give their lives for the Guru they fought over who would be the target. The proud king was greatly humbled.
Bidhi Chand used to be a thief before he met Guru Hargobind. The Emperor, had intercepted two beautiful horses named Dilbagh and Gulbagh that were going to be given to the Guru. Bidhi Chand used his skills one more time to steal the Guru's horses back from the emperor and unite them with the Guru.
Humayun went to Guru Angad to get blessing and restore his rule. He got angry that the Guru didn't give him respect so he went to kill the Guru. Then Guru Angad told him that he is quick to kill men of God, but couldn't defend his on kingdom. Humayun bowed to the Guru and asked forgiveness.
Harnakash the king made everyone chant his name, but his son Prahlad refused, saying he would rather chant on Ram. Harnakash became very angry and tried to kill Pralaad, but God Himself saved Prahlad. Then God appeared in the form of a man lion to punish Harnakash and killed Harnakash for his treachery.
