Position Description:

The Gurbani Media Center (GMC) & SikhNet Radio (website & apps) are some of SikhNet’s most used services and we are looking for someone to manage and oversee all the content. We are in the process of rebuilding GMC from the ground up as the Free Sikh “Spotify” or “Saavn”, Music Service of the Sikhs that will be of service for Sikhs all over the world. 

We are looking for someone living in India who is a quick learner, an organized, business oriented, tech savvy, self starter who is passionate about Gurbani Kirtan and able to take on the responsibility to manage GMC remotely.   

Some of the job tasks require skills that you may not have yet, and could be learned so long as you have these personal qualities. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Audio editing. Editing live recordings and digitizing old recordings from cassette tapes.

  • Adding/Editing ID3 Tags to Audio files to ensure consistent format for audios.

  • Picking out daily/weekly featured playlists/audio/albums/artists

  • Creating custom curated Gurbani/Audio playlists for our different styles/moods.

  • Tagging/organizing Gurbani audio (raag/style/category/etc)

  • Finding new Gurbani audio (online, CDs, etc.) to include in GMC

  • Ripping Audio CD’s to MP3s

  • Uploading/Adding new audio to GMC

  • Adding and keeping Artist profile info current (photos, bio, links, music, etc)

  • Communicating with Musicians/Music Labels about use on SikhNet

  • Create custom selected SikhNet Radio programming for Channels 1-7

  • Monitor live Gurdwara radio channels for any problems

  • Communicate with Gurdwaras and assist with setting up new live radio channels for SikhNet Radio.

  • Ongoing follow-up with existing Gurdwaras that broadcast through SikhNet Radio

  • Monitoring traffic and usage data of the Gurbani Media Center to evaluate potential changes & improvements.

  • Recruiting and managing volunteers who can assist with GMC

  • Reviewing audio Gurbani audio uploads by users 

Required Abilities, Knowledge and Skills.

BSc/BA in computer science, engineering or relevant field. Tech-savvy. 

Person must be a fast learner, self starter, organized and motivated to be able to work on their own. 

It is important that the person be proactive and able to effectively manage their time and get things done. 

Must have good communication skills to deal with SikhNet users and communication with Gurdwaras in relation to setup or problems on SikhNet Radio. 

Must be fluent in English and Punjabi (speaking and writing/typing)

 

Gurbani Kirtan Lover

  • Must be familiar with most well known musicians/ragis

  • Adept at Gurbani search methods of searching (Like SikhiToTheMax first letter search of Gurbani words)

  • Regular listener and familiar with various Gurbani Kirtan styles and audio types

  • Classical Raag Kirtan

  • Old/Classic Kirtan (60’s, 70’s,80’s)

  • Western Style Kirtan (eg: Uses western instruments and style)

  • Mainstream (non raag kirtan)

  • Gurbani Katha

 

Skilled Computer User

Must be a skilled computer user.  Able to setup own computer, self manage your computer, run backups, install programs and software updates, Troubleshoot internet problems, good at finding things through google, etc.

 

Audio Editing Experience (Digitizing old recordings from cassette tapes )

  • Familiar with editing audio in programs like Adobe Audition, Audacity, Soundforge, etc

  • Able to do audio editing to adjust audio levels, cleanup sound, split audio files into multiple tracks.

  • Able to add and edit ID3 Tags in MP3 files

  • Can record/digitize audio from cassette tapes

 

Desired Abilities

  • Experience doing live broadcasts (audio and or video streaming like shoutcast/icecast, and video like youtube live, facebook live)

  • Plays kirtan and/or has studied classical Gurbani kirtan

  • Amritdhari / Has regular Sikhi practice

  • Motivated to do this job because they want to make a difference in the world (not just having a job)

  • Graphic design experience using Adobe Photoshop, Adobe illustrator, etc.

  • Basic web development HTML/CSS experience

  • Has created and managed content in Drupal CMS

  • Basic command line Linux server experience

  • Updating software on linux server 

 

Job Requirements

Must be available and able to meet regularly virtually through skype/google hangouts video calls for meetings. SikhNet office is based in USA so must be able to work some of the time so that it coincides with main office work hours. So if in India that would mean working some late evening hours  (for example 9-11pm IST) 

There is some flexibility in setting specific work hours and days that work for you, however, this is a full time job working approximately 40 hours per week and schedule would need to be set in advance and agreed upon. 

Must have a dedicated fast and reliable internet connection at work location 

1 Year minimum commitment to SikhNet for doing this job.

Probation Period

If selected, a period of 90 days on the job will be used to assess if you are a good fit for SikhNet.

Compensation

Salary will be commensurate with experience. Benefits include vacation and sick leave.
