“The American Sikh community has been actively participating in Chicago Memorial Day ceremonies and parades since 2012. This year in 2022 the members of the American Sikh community from all over the area came together and participated in three separate events in Chicago Downtown, Villages of Schaumburg and Naperville.”
This event also celebrated the proclamation of the State of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker for the month of February to be the “Punjabi Language Month” in the state of Illinois.
This is in accordance with the United Nations International Mother Language Day which is a worldwide annual observance held on 21 February approved by U.N.E.S.C.O. to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and to promote preservation and protection of all languages.
A team of the Sikh Religious Society of Chicago members spent their Thanksgiving Day volunteering to serve the traditional Thanksgiving meal, also contribute food items and funds for the needy at the Salvation Army located at 825 Christiana Ave in Chicago, Illinois, USA. The local Sikhs have been doing this service since 1992.
The theme of the PCS float and its contingent was to “Thank the Farmers on this Thanksgiving Day” because they work so hard in the fields to grow food to feed the world. PCS participants worked the crowd and the spectators loved Punjabi Bhangra music blast and live Punjabi Dhol drum. Many clapped and screamed in ecstasy and danced Bhangra to enjoy the moment.
Many local community members participated to show oneness and solidarity with the Sikh American community.
He said that the Sikh visitors to Pakistan have an open invitation to visit the Governor’s mansion while visiting Pakistan and he is open to any suggestions to make their travel more comfortable.
