“In a country with over 70% of the population in the agricultural and its allied sectors, the past few weeks have been increasingly difficult with farmer suicide rates on the rise and violence in the face of peaceful protests. Pageant women have a unique ability to bring attention to issues and also, gain widespread support - financially and otherwise - within their communities. We know we have this unique platform and we are passionate about using it for what we believe in strongly,” says Serene Singh, the project’s founder.

Several US lawmakers have expressed their support for the farmers protest.

Cynics say that this summer’s racial-justice protests changed little. New Jersey wants to prove them wrong.

“The nationwide airing of this documentary is a historic moment for the Sikh American community since this is the largest broadcast of the founder of our faith, Guru Nanak, in the United States. It is incredibly exciting to have so many television stations airing this film and to provide people an easy opportunity to learn about our faith,” Shawn Singh Ghuman, co-founder of the National Sikh Campaign and We Are Sikhs – a leading effort to educate people on the Sikh faith and its followers. “With the support of PBS, we are bringing an unparalleled level of Sikh awareness to thousands of Americans who have never heard of Guru Nanak and his messages of equality, tolerance, woman’s empowerment, and community service.”

Currently, she is applying to master’s degree programs in clinical and mental health counseling. Early on in her academic career, she had planned to pursue a PhD in research, but she found out that one of her greatest joys was helping make a difference in the lives of people in need.

While their numbers might be smaller when compared to the Sikh men protesting, Sikh women are seen at the forefront in many cases. “Women are involved in unprecedented numbers in this campaign,” writes Ravinder Randhawa. “They form a significant proportion of the convoys heading towards Delhi.” One farmer Randhawa interviewed, Harinder Bindu, is herself a full time farmer for over 30 years, who is leading a monumental march of [hundreds if not thousands] of women.

Born on 31st Oct. 1926 in the town of Moga, Punjab-India, Kapany grew up in the Himalayan foothill city of Dehradun and graduated in 1948 from Agra University, later receiving his doctorate from Imperial College London in 1955. He married Satinder Kaur, and the couple soon migrated to the United States where he first worked at Rochester University and then at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago.
