Washington: EcoSikh, a global environmental organization, has been honored with a prestigious award at the 12th Sikh Awards, held at Bel La monde Hotel in New Delhi. The organization was acknowledged in the presence of distinguished attendees from the Sikh community.
EcoSikh has planted 850 forests in Punjab and other parts of India totaling half a million surviving and thriving trees. The forests are called Guru Nanak Sacred Forests, an initiative started in 2019 by the organization as a tribute to the 550th birth-anniversary of Guru Nanak, the founder of the Sikh faith. It was awarded in the category of Sikhs in Charity at the Sikh Awards.
Dr. Rajwant Singh, the Global President of EcoSikh, accepted the award and said, "This award truly belongs to the young forest makers of Punjab who have worked day and night, in all weather conditions to contribute to our environmental initiatives. Their commitment and hard work inspire us all to do more for our planet." EcoSikh has over 20 young forest makers who carry on organization's work throughout India.
Supreet Kaur, EcoSikh President India, stated, "This recognition is a testament to the impactful forest plantations and climate-related work undertaken by EcoSikh. It motivates us to continue our mission of environmental stewardship and inspire positive change within the Sikh community and beyond."
Navdeep Singh Bansal, the UK-based founder of the Sikh Awards, shared insights into the purpose of the awards. He said, "The Sikh Awards, now in its 12th edition, celebrates individuals and organizations making a positive impact on society, culture, and the environment." He extended heartfelt congratulations to this year's awardees. Past awards have held in London, Delhi, Toronto, Nairobi, Dubai and this was the 2nd time in New Delhi.
Among the notable attendees were Tarlochan Singh, Former Member of Parliament, and Manjit Singh GK, former president of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee. Manjit Singh GK took a moment to commend Dr. Rajwant Singh for his impactful contributions, extending from the White House to the Vatican, in raising awareness about Sikh principles on a global stage. Shubhendu Sharma, founder of Afforestt and an esteemed advisor to EcoSikh, also attended the event. This year's event also had powerful bhangra and gatka performances on stage.
Navdeep Singh Bansal, commended EcoSikh's work by stating, "EcoSikh's dedication to environmental work, prompted many to recommend their name to be recognized this year. This award is a recognition of their exemplary efforts and a testament to their commitment to a sustainable future."
Charan Singh, EcoSikh Forest Convener, who joined from Mumbai, said, EcoSikh remains steadfast in its mission to plant 1 million trees by next year and we are also taking much bigger goals in the coming years. The organization is committed to fostering a greener planet and inspiring further action within the Sikh community."
EcoSikh has been invited by White House, Vatican, United Nations and many other international platforms. EcoSikh was also invited to speak at UN summit on Climate at Glasgow and in Dubai. EcoSikh aims to inspire and engage individuals and communities in adopting eco-friendly practices, promoting green spaces, and addressing climate change challenges.
