Teacher of Humanity - Guru Nanak

Jasbir Singh Architect

Guru Nanak’s Gifts to us: “Eak Onnkar” which means creator of all of us is one.

A powerful truth, it can bring all humanity of the universe together. He said “Eak pita eakas ke ham barik” - There is only one father (creator-source) of us all. I am a friend to all; I am everyone's friend. Do not speak ill of others, or get involved in arguments.

Before him religions, creeds and casts separated people. Which creates hate among neighbors such as Jewish & Palestine (Arabs), Christians hating Muslims, Hindus hating scheduled (lower) casts, even Skin color difference leading to hate, Whites hating blacks, list goes on. Leading to become cause of unrest and destruction, even wars all around us.

Guru Nanak gave message of universal brotherhood, peace and unity. Recognize all human race as One.

Guru Nanak taught following: Without practicing his teachings our lives and society would be an unjust & unlivable society. He taught “Honest-productive-Labour” (kirat)”. “Only such a person can realizes the spiritual who earns by his brow and shares his earnings with the needy. In the darkest period of Indian history, when justice was dispensed, if palms were filled.

Priests had reduced faith to a mockery. Famous Hindu writer Dr. Gokul Chand (Narang) writes in his book- Glorious History of Sikhism on page 13.

In the period of Guru Nanak, Brhamins used to take bath in different ways and at different places. Different ways of putting ‘Tilak‘ on fore head was popularized. Foods were eaten in Special ways and such other external (showoff) activities, was limited to religion. Idols were popularized and worshiped everywhere. Folks will travel to cities declared religious and bathe in ‘Ganga’ also declared holy, (Like Benaras, Prayag, Hardwar etc.) perform rituals without understanding value as told by Brhamin-Pandit. At this time they will give gifts & money to them. That’s all was Hindu Dharma.”

Guru Nanak has helped built a nation of self respecting men & women. Women were treated worst sati pratha prevailed”- women being burnt alive along with their husband‘s dead body. Giving proper place to women (Written in Guru Granth - Sikh Scripture) he said: “Born of women, nourished by women, wedded to women, why do they revile women? How can women be inferior? They are the one who gives birth to saints, prophets & kings.

Guru Nanak has taught much about spiritual life by removing our delusions, such as: False-mindedness is the drummer-woman; cruelty is the butcheress; slander of others in one's heart is the cleaning-woman, and deceitful anger is the outcast-woman. What good are the ceremonial lines drawn around your kitchen, when these four are seated there with you? Make Truth your self-discipline, and make good deeds the lines you draw; make chanting the Name your cleansing bath. O Nanak, those who do not walk in the ways of sin, shall be exalted in the world hereafter.

He also included wisdom of many other bhagats, saints and wise men from different areas of India and different faiths, speaking different languages without any discrimination Bramin or untouchable; Kabir, Farid, Ramanand, Bhikan ji, Jaidev, soordas ji -15 in all together.

If the Lord Allah lives only in the mosque, then to whom does the rest of the world belong? According to the Hindus, the Lord's Name abides in the idol, but there is no truth in either of these claims. O Allah, O Ram, I live by Your Name. The God of the Hindus lives in the southern lands, and the God of the Muslims lives in the west. So search in your heart - look deep into your heart of hearts; this is the home and the place where God lives. O people, O Siblings of Destiny, do not wander deluded by doubt. The Creation is in the Creator, and the Creator is in the Creation, totally pervading and permeating all places.

We don’t give our father name. He is called appa, papa, father, pita, abba etc. Similarly creator is named by various names as Hari, Gobind, Ram, Allah, Kuda, Karim, Pita, Parbraham, Parmeshwar, Guru Granth’ is only scripture to include many names and wisdom of many, thus a universal scripture.

Three tenants of Guru Nanak ----------so we may have a blissful life.
