OAK CREEK — The Sikh Human Rights Group has pledged a $10,000 award for Oak Creek Police Lieutenant Brian Murphy following the shooting at the Sikh Temple in Oak Creek Sunday, August 5th.

Lt.Brian Murphy was shot 8 times by Wisconsin Gurdwara gunman and survived

Lt. Murphy was among the first to the scene following the initial 911 calls into Oak Creek Dispatch describing the situation.

Oak Creek Police Chief John Edwards said during a press briefing Monday morning, upon arriving at the scene, Lt. Murphy came upon an injured individual and began rendering aid, when he was “ambushed” by the shooter — now identified as 40-year-old Wade Michael Page.

Lt. Murphy suffered eight to nine gunshot wounds. Lt. Murphy reportedly waved off other officers who came to his aid, urging them to enter the temple to attend to other potential victims.

Another Oak Creek officer engaged Wade, an “active shooter,” and fatally shot him after he reportedly failed to comply with officers’ commands.

Officers arriving on the scene carried Lt. Murphy to a vehicle that transported him to Froedtert Hospital. Lt. Murphy had surgery at Froedtert Sunday, and was reportedly resting with family in Froedtert’s ICU Monday.

Officials say Lt. Murphy is expected to be okay.

Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), a national human rights organization, applauds the heroic action of officers from the Oak Creek Police department.

The organization is pledging a $10,000 award to Lt. Murphy for his “heroic actions” during Sunday’s shooting.
