September 15, 2016: For the first time in Plymouth, people will be given the chance to learn how to tie a Turban

Labour Councillor Chaz Singh will be providing free demonstrations for both men and woman to spread awareness of the Sikh religion and tackle the problem of rising hate in the city.

The Sikh Turban is an article of faith that represents spirituality, sovereignty, self-respect, honour and piety and has been associated with the religion since the very beginning in 1469.

Worn to cover Sikh's heads, it is a long piece of cloth wrapped around the head fold by fold and tied daily.

Cllr Singh will be meeting members of the public as part of the Plymouth Art Weekender on Friday, September, 23 at the Civic Piazza and Sunday, September, 25 from 10am to 5pm at the Piazza, right next to the Big Screen.

The spiritual item of clothing is also referred to under the names of "Dastar," or "Pagri," (often shortened to "Pagg,").

Traditionally in India, the turban was only worn by higher society whereas, people of low status, were not allowed, or could not even afford to wear a turban.
