Celebrating the 343rd Prakash divas of Sri Guru Gobind Singh jee, sangat members from Sikh Educational and Welfare Association – Guruduara Saheb, Roswell GA, distributed the warm Hoodies and snacks to the occupants of a homeless shelter in downtown Atlanta, GA.

Entire southeast US has been experiencing one of the severe cold weather of last 20 years, with day time temperature remaining below freezing for many days. The brutal weather has claimed some lives, and pipe bursts have forced people out of their homes, resulting in crowding of the homeless shelters, which are facing lack of food and warm clothes.

With financial contributions and endeavors from local Sangat members along with a local clothing designer company,  got around 450 warm hoodies manufactured from India in a very short period of time and at a very nominal cost.

Out of these 250 hoodies were distributed on January 9th,  to the occupants of a homeless shelter in downtown Atlanta.

The remaining hoodies will be distributed on coming weekend in a homeless shelter occupied by women and children.  Many volunteers helped in preparing the snack packets at the Guruduara saheb, which were distributed along with the hoodies.

A similar effort of serving food (Langar) to homeless people was made during the Thanksgiving weekend last year. Hot mixed vegetables, buns, fruit and drinks were served to all the occupants.

The Chairperson of the SEWA Guruduara Saheb, Jasbir Kaur Guliani shared that these efforts are an attempt to reach out to the mainstream community and serve the section of the society in need. She said more of such initiatives, like serving at Old-age home, fight against cancer support events, and participation in local community development efforts will be undertaken by sangat members.
