In this story Guru Nanak, Bala and Mardana visit two different villages. The first one is full of mean people who treat their guests very rudely and even throw rocks at them! Guru Nanak blessed them to stay where they are.The next village was full of generous and kind people who would do anything to serve their honored guests. Guru Nanak blessed them to scatter around the world.
Mardana didn't understand the blessings, it seemed like Guru ji was cursing the kind people and rewarding the mean ones. When he finally asks, Guru ji teaches him a profound message. We can all learn from this timeless Guru story the value of being friendly and hospitable.
Each of us has to decide how we will treat others. And we who believe in the Guru’s teachings, we feel like this: ‘atit vekh nahi devai daan, so nahi paavai dargah maan’ which means, ‘The one who does not serve a guest, will not be honored in the court of God’. So go and be happy! Welcome everyone as family, and take care of your guests with love.
