OAK CREEK, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Eight years ago on this day, Aug. 5, 2012, a gunman walked into the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin and opened fire, killing six people.
The shooter, identified as a white supremacist from Cudahy, then turned the gun on himself.
The Oak Creek Police Department shared a message on the eighth anniversary of the tragedy.
"We pause to remember those lives that were lost, think about those that were injured, and offer strength to those who must carry the events of that day with them forever. We also owe a debt of gratitude to the first responding police officers including Lieutenant Brian Murphy. The brave actions of these officers helped to prevent further loss of life and and for that we are forever grateful. Please keep members of the Sikh community in your thoughts today."
