Magnificence of Waheguru
I want to start this note by sharing an insight I got during my conversation with a very learned man in April 2019. He was talking about establishing relationship with Akal Purakh - Waheguru and said if you know the President of any country really well and have good relationships with him, all your worldly things in that land will get done. Imagine what all can happen if you know Waheguru and develop strong connection - everything in your material and spiritual world gets sorted out. This insight intrigued me and I started on the journey to know more about Waheguru and also on how I could develop better relationship. The note below is outcome of that search and I was guided by my Guru (SGGS) through the process.
Waheguru has been introduced to us by Guru Nanak in the Mool Mantra, the first thing he recited when he emerged from three day long deep meditation. He said:
Waheguru is One - all pervasive in the Universe - Creator , Sustainer and Destroyer ੴ
Waheguru has always existed and is Truth, ਸੱਤ and has a Name ਨਾਮ - called as Allah, Ram, God, Gosain etc in different traditions.
Introduced as Waheguru by Guru Nanak and described as wondrous Guru who takes us from darkness to light.
Waheguru is the creator of Universe and the energy behind everything ਕਰਤਾ
Waheguru is manifested as creation in the Universe ਪੁਰਖ
Waheguru is supreme and has no fears ਨਿਰਭਉ
Waheguru has no equal and has no enmity with any one ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ
Waheguru is eternal , beyond the realm of time ਅਕਾਲ
Waheguru is manifested in different forms in the Universe ਮੁਰਤਿ
Waheguru is not born out of womb ਅਜੂਨੀ
Waheguru is self illuminating energy ਸੈਭੰ
Guru Nanak concluded Mool Mantar by saying that
Waheguru is revealed through blessings of Satguru. ਗੁਰਪ੍ਰਸਾਦ
Bhagat Kabir says that all of us are also spark of this supreme energy, which he calls Ram;
ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਇਹੁ ਰਾਮ ਕੀ ਅੰਸੁ ॥ ਅੰਗ ੮੭੧
This tells us that Waheguru ji is supreme cosmic energy and all beings are part of this whole.
Waheguru is within us, all around us, and everything in this universe goes by the Hukam- divine order.
Guru Nanak says ;
ਹੁਕਮੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਹੁਕਮ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥
Gurbani describes Akal Purakh - Waheguru as the most supreme being who connects with us at different levels.
Some of them are;
1. Creator and Nurturer
ਆਪਿ ਉੁਪਾਏ ਉੁਪਾਵਣਹਾਰਾ ਅਪਣਾ ਕੀਆ ਪਾਲਣਾ ॥
2. Provider
ਕਰਤਾ ਤੂ ਮੇਰਾ ਜਜਮਾਨੁ ॥
3. Parent
ਤੂ ਮੇਰਾ ਪਿਤਾ ਤੂਹੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਾਤਾ ॥
ਤੂ ਮੇਰੇ ਜੀਅ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ
4. Owner
ਸਚੁ ਸਾਹੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ਤੂੰ ਧਣੀ ਸਭੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਵਣਜਾਰਾ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਜੇ ॥
ਸਭ ਭਾਂਡੇ ਤੁਧੈ ਸਾਜਿਆ ਵਿਚਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਥਾਰਾ ॥
5. Teacher
ਹਮ ਬਾਰਿਕ ਤੂੰ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਿਤਾ ਹੈ ਦੇ ਮਤਿ ਸਮਝਾਏ ॥
6. Friend
ਜਾ ਕਾ ਮੀਤੁ ਸਾਜਨੁ ਹੈ ਸਮੀਆ ॥
ਤਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਕਉੁ ਕਹੁ ਕਾ ਕੀ ਕਮੀਆ ॥
7. Physician
ਮੇਰਾ ਬੈਦੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੋਵਿੰਦਾ ॥
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਉੁਖਧੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਦੇਵੈ ਕਾਟੈ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਫੰਧਾ ॥
8. Master
ਤੂ ਮੇਰਾ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਹਉੁ ਦਾਸੁ ਤੇਰਾ ॥
9. Protector
ਤੂੰ ਮੇਰਾ ਰਾਖਾ ਸਭਨੀ ਥਾਈ ਤਾ ਭਉੁ ਕੇਹਾ ਕਾੜਾ ਜੀਉੁ ॥
10. Beloved
ਤੁਮਹਿ ਸੁ ਕੰਤ ਨਾਰਿ ਹਮ ਸੋਈ ॥
The magnificence of Waheguru is abundantly described in SGGS.
Guru ji tells us that we should experience Waheguru through Shabad and try to personally experience the energy. Also, Guru ji encourages us to tap on to this energy field for our spiritual and material growth. I am the beginner and at the boot camp of this journey and following practices helped me to get started;
Regular Paath - Nitnem and Sehaj and reflect on teachings.
Regular Simran - Jaap of ‘Waheguru’ mantra in systematic manner. Attributes of Waheguru as explained in Mool Mantra and different levels at which Supreme connects were kept in mind while doing Simran.
Recitation and reflection on Shabads - Also recitation and reflection on suitable Shabads help me in tapping the kind of energy I needed e.g. when I needed healing, I reflected on Shabads of Waheguru as physician helping me through healing process. Similarly when I needed Waheguru’s help as a teacher, provider, protector, friend, beloved etc there are many Shabads in SGGS which are of immense help. I have given sample of Shabads in the notes above which have helped me. I have also seen that appropriate Shabads get revealed when I sought help.
Stayed in respectful obedience and establish relationship of love with Waheguru.
Mool Mantra Meditation - Significance of Mool Mantar is such that Guru Sahib encouraged me to completely internalise it. Guru Nanak writes about this;
ਅਉੁਖਧ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਮੂਲੁ ਮਨ ਏਕੈ ਜੇ ਕਰਿ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੁ ਚਿਤੁ ਕੀਜੈ ਰੇ ॥
ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੇ ਪਾਪ ਕਰਮ ਕੇ ਕਾਟਨਹਾਰਾ ਲੀਜੈ ਰੇ ॥ ਅੰਗ ੧੫੬
Tapping on to this supreme power can completely transform our lives and we can really attract abundance of bounties of Waheguru ji. I have seen blessings of Waheguru helping me at different phases of my life and have no doubts that if we live in accordance with teachings of SGGS, these blessings will grow multifold.
I will close this note by inviting all readers to stay under sanctuary of Guru Sahib and make relationship with Waheguru as the highest priority.
