Guru Gobind Singh’s literal and metaphorical poem Shastraa Naam Maalaa (The Rosary of Weapons) from The Dasam Granth Saahib has now been translated for the first time in history (completely) by Dr. Akaalee Nirbo Singh (including a detailed English translation of each Sanskrit word with explanations of meanings).
This Shastra Naam Maalaa translation is the only one to currently exist and a work that took over 3 years to complete. This is an excerpt from the translation
Chapter III
The Description of the Names of The Great Arrow (Sidee Baan)
Dohadaa: O significant Baan (arrow), the son of the
bow and destroyer of the armor, forever bring us
victory and fulfill our tasks.
Saying first “Danush (bow)” and then “Agraja (son of the
bow),” all the names of the Baan (arrow) can be
comprehended correctly.
Saying first “Panach (aiming at the enemies)” and then
“Agraja (and shooting the sons of the bow, i.e. arrows),”
all the names of Baan (arrow) continue to be evolved.
Saying the names of “Nikhanga (arrows)” and then
describing “Baasee (that are like an artery or a pipe, i.e.
arrow shaft),” all the names of Baan (arrow) can be
known.
After naming “Mrigayan (killing the enemies like deer)”
and then saying “Haa (with the bow and arrows),” all
the names of Baan (arrow) are comprehended in the
mind.
After saying all the names of “Kavach (protecting like
armor)” and adding the word “Baydak (by smashing,24
destroying and annihilating),” all the names of the Baan
(arrow) continue to be evolved.
After saying all the names of “Chaaram (the final act, i.e.
death)” and adding the word “Chaydak (by cutting the
body),” the wise people come to know all the names of
the Baan (arrow) in their mind.
After saying “Subhat (like a great warrior)” and then
adding “Haa (as an arrow),” the wise say all the names
of the Baan (arrow).
After saying “Sab – Pakchan (all birds, i.e. arrows flying
like birds with feathers)” and then adding “Paar
(sending out and flying to the enemies),” the wise
recognize all the names of the Baan (arrow).
After adding the word “Antak (death)” with “Panchee
(as arrows flying like birds), Padee (with the power of
The One),” and “Pankh - Dhaar (flowing to the enemies
in groups),” all the names of Baan (arrow) are
recognized in the mind.
Saying the names of “Akaash (the sky, i.e. arrow that
flies through the sky)” and then “Chaar (as an
emissary),” the wise people recognize all the names the
Baan (arrow).
After saying “Kay (flying in the the sky), Akaash (in the
blue sky), Nabh (and injuring) and Gagan (from the25
sky),” and then “Chaar (as an emissary),” the wise may
comprehend correctly all the names of the Baan
(arrow).
After saying “Asmaan (like the charioteer of Suryaa the
sun god), Sipayhada (as a ray of The One), Div (from the
sky), Gaardu (like the king of birds, i.e. Gaarudaa,
Vishnu’s vehicle),” etc. and then “Chaar (sent as an
emissary),” the names of the Baan (arrow) are known.
Saying “Chandra (bright and shinning in the sky like the
moon of wisdom)” in the beginning and then adding
“Dayho (and moving to the body of the enemy)” and
finally “Chaar (as an emissary),” the names of the Baan
(arrow) are formed.
After adding the word “Chaar (as an emissary)” at the
end of the words “Go (arrows), Madeech (like rays of
“light” that kill the literal enemies and the wisdom that
kills the ignorance, i.e. “darkness”), Keeranang (as
“rays” of wisdom), Chaataa - Dhaar (flowing as
wisdom),” etc., the names of the Baan (arrow) are
formed.
After saying “Rajaneesaar (the queen of the night and
wife of Suryaa the sun god, i.e. the “moon” of wisdom as
death of the “darkness” of ignorance)” and “Dinahaa
(flying like a bird),” and adding the word “Durandhar
(as a bearer of a burden for the enemies)” at the end, all
the names of the Baan (arrow) continue to be evolved.26
Saying “Chaar – Dhaar (flowing as an emissary)” along
with “Raatree (like Raatree the queen of the night, i.e.
the “moon” of wisdom as death over ignorance), Nisaa
(as the queen of the “night,” i.e. death over ignorance)”
and “Din – Gatanee (with wisdom, i.e. “light,” from a
kind of club, i.e. the arrow that destroys ignorance; the
literal arrow and the arrow of the Shabad Gudu
obtained when the arrow of love of The Formless One
kills the ego),” all the names of Baan (arrow) are
evolved.
After saying “Upraajanee (like Raatree the queen of the
night, i.e. the “moon” of wisdom as death over
ignorance)” and then “Chaar - Dhaar (flowing to the
enemy as an emissary),” all the names of the Baan
(arrow) can be remembered.
The words “Rain (the “moon” of wisdom that kills
ignorance), Andhak - Pat (with spikes from The One),
Nispat (flying and destroying),” etc. are known by the
name “Chandra – Baan (arrows of wisdom), which in
the form of “Chandraamaa (the “moon,” i.e. the light of
wisdom)” kills the forms steeped in darkness
(ignorance).”
Saying the names of the “Sab - Keeran (all arrows like
rays of wisdom)” and then “Dhaar (that flow in an easy
course to the enemies)” twice, all the names of the Baan
(arrow) are known.27
Saying all names of “Samundada (a flood of arrows)”
and then adding “Sut – Dayho (pressing out from the
body)” at the end, and then afterwards saying “Dhaar
(and flowing to the enemies),” all the names of the Baan
(arrow) come forward (in the mind).
