Introduction to the short stories

The short stories are a collection of stories taken from the Aadh Guru Granth Bhagat Mala, which have been translated into simple English. The purpose of translating these stories is to provide understanding and the significance of these stories when reciting Gurbaani.

The Sikh Gurus and other Bhagats within Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji have made references to the various saints and disciples who existed at the time of the Hindu deities. By no means are these stories a form of praise or worship of the Hindu deities, but they are used as a reference to purely develop the meaning of Gurbaani.

The stories taken from Hindu mythology provide examples from the lives of the disciples and saints as parallels to understand the power and greatness of the One Lord, the righteous practise of faith and Dharma and how one is emancipated from sin and misfortune through meditating upon the Primal Lord.

Sri Dhru Bhagat Ji

''Paach Barukh Ko Anaath Dhru Baarik Har Simaruth Amar Attaarae."

'The five year old orphan boy Dhru, by meditating in remembrance upon the Lord,
became stationary and permanent.'

(Guru Arjan Dev Ji; GGSJ: 999)

In the Age of Satyug, Bhagat Dhru was born. He was born in the house of Raja Utanpadh. Dhru's mother's name was Mata Suniti, who was a very religious and virtuous woman.

Raja Utanpadh had two wives. The youngest one was very beautiful and the other one was a very jealous woman, who had a very strong hold on Raja Utanpadh. Within the palace, she had a young son, who stayed with the Raja. The Raja was very loving towards this child and sat the child upon his laps and played with him.

One day, Dhru went to his father and sat upon his laps. On seeing Dhru in the laps of Raja Utanpadh, and the connection between both father and son caused Surichi's mind to fill with great anger and envy. Surichi had cunningly planned to make her son the next Raja of the palace. In great anger she exclaimed, "Get away, you are not allowed to sit in the Raja's laps! Move this instance and don't return to this palace!"

Seeing the anger in Surichi's eyes, Raja Utanpadh remained silent. Having been forcefully removed from his father's laps, Dhru was deeply distressed. He sat there thinking, why he was not allowed to sit in his father's laps and what did he do that was so wrong. Dhru returned to his mother, crying and in deep pain. His mother, Suniti picked up Dhru and held him against her bosom and asked, "What is the matter with you, why are you crying, has someone hit you?"

"O mother, I was sitting on my father's laps and my step-mother shouted at me and told me that I was not allowed to sit on my father's laps", Dhru said in great anguish.

"O my child, do not worry. You should have not sat in your father's laps, as you have no right to do so", Suniti explained to her son.

Dhru then asked his mother, "O mother, explain me this to me then, are you a wife or a mistress. I don't understand!"

"O my child, of course I'm his wife! But..!" Suniti paused and remained quiet.

"Then why can't I sit in my own father's laps?"

"It is because you have not meditated on the Lord".

"Then tell me O mother what I should do so that I can obtain eternal bliss and not be shouted at again?"

Dhru's mother explained that the only way he would achieve eternal bliss would be by meditating upon the Lord's name.

"Fine mother I will go and mediate," Dhru spoke.

"O my child! Now is not the time to meditate, as you are far too young. What will I do when you are gone? You are all I have", cried Suniti.

Night had fallen and Dhru had not slept. All he could see in front of his eyes was his step-mother's anger, grabbing his arm and pulling him away from his father. He looked over and saw that his mother was asleep. On seeing her asleep, Dhru decided that he will leave home and find the Lord. Dhru made his way towards the jungles barefooted. On hearing the frightening sounds of the jungle, Dhru prayed to God, "Bhagwan! I am coming to you. I do not know Your name…I do not know what to call You-but I am coming to You."

Dhru sat on the ground and rested. The rays of the sun brightened the whole jungle, the flowers blossomed and the birds sang sweetly. The jungle was a place of tranquillity and peace. Dhru looked forward and saw a blue river. He saw birds sitting at the river bank, drinking the water. He made his way to the river bank and took a sip from the flowing blue river. He sat up and said "Where could the Lord be?" He then cried aloud, "Bhagwan! Bhagwan! I have come." On continually shouting the Lord's name, Narad Muni, a Rishi came. Dhru said, "Are you Bhagwan?"

"No, dear child, I am not Bhagwan- Bhagwan is faraway. You cannot go there," Narad explained.

Dhru: "Why can't I go?"

BhagatDhru (41K)Narad: Your age is far too small. You are the son of Raja Utanpadh. Tapoban (forests) is far. Along the way are many jungles. The tigers and lions will eat you up. You will not be able to survive, for there is no food to eat. Come with me, I will take you back to your father. He will grant you with half his kingdom."

Dhru began to laugh, "Half the kingdom! I am going to meet Bhagwan. If I am given a chance to meet Bhagwan then I will most definitely obtain half a kingdom. Look, I do not know who you are or where you have come from, but if you continually stop me from meeting with the Lord then you are my enemy! Leave me alone! If something eats me, then let it be!"

Narad was amazed at this innocent child and was moved by his words. "Okay fine. Your thoughts are wise and correct. Meditating upon the Lord's name is the greatest achievement in life. Remember this mantra: 'Om Nameh Bhagvateh Vaasdevey' and then close your eyes and chant 'Keshav Kalesh Hari', no pain or obstacles will come near you. All your wishes will be fulfilled."

On giving this mantra, Narad disappeared. Dhru sat upon a rock and began to meditate. On the other side, Suniti awoke. She looked around for Dhru, but he was nowhere to be found. She began to panic and cried, "Dhru! Dhru! Where are you?" Suniti searched the whole palace, but Dhru was nowhere to be found. It seemed as though a shadow of darkness had overcome Suniti's world.

Raja Utanpadh heard the news and made his way to see Suniti, but his second wife, Surichi stopped him, "Don't go! He'll be found. He has deceived us all. He has hidden from us and just wants to get your attention." Raja Utanpadh paused for a moment and looked up and saw Narad. Narad said to Raja Utanpadh, "O Raja! What is the matter? You seemed surprised. What has your younger wife done now?"

On hearing Narad's words, Raja Utanpadh felt ashamed. "O Muni Ji! My older wife, Suniti's son, Dhru is missing. Yesterday, Surichi shouted at him and told him to get lost. Now we have no idea what has happened to Dhru."

"Hari Narayan! O Raja…your son is not lost. He has become a hermit and is meditating in the jungles. You have hurt that poor soul's heart. He has lost attachment in your kingdom and riches. You have not loved your son. You have ill-treated Suniti. Anyone who commits such an act will suffer for life. Dhru will meditate upon 'Keshav Kalesh' and obtain the kingdom.

"Please tell me, is it really true that my son has gone to Tapoban? Will he be meditating? O my son will be hungry, how will he cope with the heat and coldness?" Raja Utanpadh began to question Narad. "Narad go and bring my son back. I will present him with half my kingdom. Tell him he will obtain peace within this palace. Let him meditate but don't let him starve."

Narad: "O Raja! He will not return. He will most definitely continue with his meditation". On saying this, Narad disappeared and went to see Suniti. He offered his condolences and said, "O Suniti! Do not worry for the offspring you brought into this world has become successful. Remain happy, your son will become a saint."

DhruVishnu (66K)Raja Utanpadh went to the jungles to find Dhru but he was unsuccessful. He came back disappointed. On seeing his father leave, Dhru felt more confident and continued with his meditation. Dhru's mediation was so powerful, even Indar made many attempts to break his mediation but was unsuccessful. Indar sent the demon 'Maya May' to break Dhru's mediation by shaking the earth, making it rain and causing tornados but Indar saw that there was nothing that he could do and he became increasingly afraid.

Indra returned and went to see Vishnu. Vishnu said, "O Indar. It is Dhru's wish to meditate; therefore it is our duty to let him. His wish is not to take over your kingdom. His concentration is on his father's kingdom. He will gain this kingdom and will reach a very high level in his meditation."

On hearing this Indar returned to his kingdom. Vishnu altered his appearance and went to Tapoban to see Dhru. He changed his appearance in accordance to what Dhru was thinking whilst he was meditating. Vishnu broke Dhru's meditation and stood in front of him. Dhru was ecstatic. Vishnu uttered these words to Dhru, "Through this strenuous meditation your mind has attained bliss. You will attain rule over your father's kingdom for 36,000 years. Your name will remain on this earth when you die." On giving these words to Dhru, Vishnu vanished.

Narad Muni went and told Raja Utanpadh all of this. There was great jubilation and excitement in the palace. People began to congratulate Suniti. Raja Utanpadh presented Dhru with the entire kingdom and he ruled the entire kingdom for 36,000 years, as Vishnu granted.

Below is the story of Bhagat Dhru as written by Bhai Gurdas Ji. Vaar 10, Pauri 1:

ਧ੍ਰੂ ਭਗਤ

ਧ੍ਰੂ ਹਸਦਾ ਘਰਿ ਆਇਆ ਕਰਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ਪਿਉ ਕੁਛੜਿ ਲੀਤਾ।

Dhr Hasadaa Ghari Aaiaa Kari Piaaru Piu Kouchharhi Leetaa.

ध्र हसदा घरि आइआ करि पिआरु पिउ कुछड़ि लीता ।

Boy Dhru came smiling to his house (palace) and his father full of love put him into his lap.

ਬਾਹਹੁ ਪਕੜਿ ਉਠਾਲਿਆ ਮਨ ਵਿਚਿ ਰੋਸੁ ਮਤ੍ਰੇਈ ਕੀਤਾ।

Baaharu Pakarhi Outdaaliaa Man Vichi Rosu Matrayee Keetaa.

बाहरु पकड़ि उठालिआ मन विचि रोसु मत्रेई कीता ।

Seeing this, the stepmother got angry and catching hold of his arm pushed him out of the lap of the father (the king).

ਡੁਡਹੁਲਿਕਾ ਮਾਂ ਪੁਛੈ ਤੂੰ ਸਾਵਾਣੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸੁਰੀਤਾ?

Dudahulikaa Maan Pouchhai Toon Saavaanee Hai Ki Sureetaa.

डुडहुलिका मां पुछै तूं सावाणी है कि सुरीता ।

Tearful with fear he asked his mother whether she was a queen or a maidservant?

ਸਾਵਾਣੀ ਹਾਂ ਜਨਮ ਦੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਮਿ ਦ੍ਰਿੜ੍ਹੀਤਾ।

Saavaanee Haan Janam Dee Naamu N Bhagatee Karami Drirhheetaa.

सावाणी हां जनम दी नामु न भगती करमि द्रिड़्हीता ।

O son! (said she) I was born queen but I did not remember God and did not undertake acts of devotion (and this is the reason of yours and mine plight).

ਕਿਸੁ ਉਦਮ ਤੇ ਰਾਜੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਤ੍ਰੂ ਤੇ ਸਭ ਹੋਵਨਿ ਮੀਤਾ?।

Kisu Udam Tay Raaju Mili Satr Tay Sabhi Hovani Meetaa.

किसु उदम ते राजु मिलि सत्र ते सभि होवनि मीता ।

With that effort can the kingdom be had (asked Dhru) and how can enemies turn friends?

ਪਰਮੇਸਰੁ ਆਰਾਧੀਐ ਜਿਦੂ ਹੋਈਐ ਪਤਿਤ ਪੁਨੀਤਾ।

Paramaysaru Aaraadheeai Jidoo Hoeeai Patit Pouneetaa.

परमेसरु आराधीऐ जिदू होईऐ पतित पुनीता ।

The Lord should be worshipped and thus the sinners also become sacred ones (said the mother).

ਬਾਹਰਿ ਚਲਿਆ ਕਰਣਿ ਤਪੁ ਮਨ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਹੋਇ ਅਤੀਤਾ।

Baahari Chaliaa Karani Tapu Man Bairaagee Hoi Ateetaa

बाहरि चलिआ करणि तपु मन बैरागी होइ अतीता ।

Listening to this and getting totally detached in his mind Dhru went out (to the jungle) to undertake rigorous discipline.

ਨਾਰਦ ਮੁਨਿ ਉਪਦੇਸਿਆ ਨਾਮ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਅਮਿਓ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਤਾ।

Naarad Mouni Oupadaysiaa Naau Nidhaanu Amiao Rasu Peetaa.

नारद मुनि उपदेसिआ नाउ निधानु अमिओ रसु पीता ।

On the way, sage Narad taught him the technique of devotion and Dhru quaffed the nectar from the ocean of the Name of the Lord.

ਪਿਛਹੁੰ ਰਾਜੇ ਸਦਿਆ ਅਬਿਚਲ ਰਾਜ ਕਰਹੁ ਨਿਤ ਨੀਤਾ।

Pichhahu Raajay Sadiaa Abichalu Raaju Karahu Nit Neetaa.

पिछहु राजे सदिआ अबिचलु राजु करहु नित नीता ।

(After some time) King (Uttanpad) called him back and asked him (Dhru) to rule forever.

ਹਾਰਿ ਚਲੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਗਜੀਤਾ ॥੧॥

Haari Chalay Guramoukhi Jag Jeetaa ॥1॥

हारि चले गुरमुखि जग जीता ॥१॥

The Gurmukhs who seem to be losing i.e. who turn their faces from the evil propensities, conquer the world.

Sri Praladh Bhagat

In the beginning of the Kaljug when great demons and deities existed; even before the time of the Hindu deity Ram Chandar, existed the great saint, Praladh. This saint is mentioned and used as a comparable example within Gurbaani. The story of Praladh is also mentioned within the Hindu scriptures (Puranas).

There was once a saint called Kaship Rishi, who performed great meditation. The reason why he left his home and made his way to the jungles to become a Rishi was due to falling in love with a young girl. He said that he would marry this young girl and she agreed to this. After some time both the Rishi and the young girl were married. Some time later, the Rishi's wife gave birth to two sons, whose names were Hirankaship and Harnakash and one daughter, whose name was Holka. All three children were powerful; the two sons had taken rule of a kingdom.

One day Hirankaship was killed by the Lord's curse. On seeing the death of his younger brother, Harnakash became increasingly afraid that the curse would also kill him because he was a demon and he knew that fighting the deities would be a challenge. But he knew that the death of his brother would mean that he would need to seek revenge. On pleasing the Lord with his immense meditation, he was granted a boon to carry out the meditation of 'Ugar'. This meditation was so powerful, Indar became intimidated.

Indar fought for Harnakash's kingdom and occupied it. Thousands of demons were destroyed. Indar abducted Harnakash's pregnant wife, Kiadoo and took her back to his kingdom. Along the way Narad Muni came and saw that Kiadoo was near to giving birth to her child, who would become a great saint.

"Devraj Indar! A battle is between great men. Why have you taken the enemies wife? Let her go!" Narad exclaimed.

At first Indar was reluctant to answer and give Kiadoo up, but he finally let her go. Narad took Kiadoo to his ashram and looked after her as though she was his own daughter. Both Kiadoo and Harnakash remained in the ashram and they became devotees of the Lord. After some time in the ashram, Kiadoo gave birth to a boy, whose was named 'Praladh'. During his meditation, Brahma appeared before Harnakash. Brahma asked Harnakash what boon he would like to be granted with.

Brahma (18K)Harnakash answered, "I do not wish to die at night or in the day, nor die inside or outside, neither die by being killed by someone or being burned alive; I do not wish to drown in water, but I wish to live forever."

At first, Brahma was slightly apprehensive in presenting Harnakash with such a boon but he finally granted him with it. Narad informed Harnakash that Indar had taken over his kingdom and killed all the people that were living there. Harnakash became enraged and gathered all the demons together and made his way towards Indar to seek revenge. Harnakash informed the others that "Whoever kills you will not be able to, but this can only happen if you carry out the meditation I did."

The battle began between Indar and Harnakash, but Indar could not do anything. Indar escaped with all his wives, maidens and servants to Brahmlok. Harnakash took to his kingdom and destroyed thousands of deities. On returning to his wife, a public procession began with the chanting of Harnakash's name instead of Bhagwan. "Harnakash! Harnakash is the water, Harnakash is the land! All power is within Harnakash!"

Many deities feared for their lives and resided with Vishnu. They cried "O Vishnu Bhagwan! All the deities' names have been destroyed and thousands have been destroyed! All practices of faith, truthfulness, Dharma will be lost! This boon that Brahma has given this demon is not right. He will destroy us all!"

Vishnu then visited Brahma. Brahma said, "He carried out powerful meditation, he deceived me and I gave him the boon, wherein he will never be able to be killed." Vishnu said, "Do not worry. Although Harnakash may have been granted a powerful boon, he will become increasingly egoistic. Think of it this way, within Harnakash's house, a son has been born, he will be a great saint of the Lord and he will meditate upon the name of 'Ram Naam'. He will become a great threat to Harnakash and attempts will be made to have him killed by his own father. Do not worry. The battle between faith and the faithless will begin."

Vishnu began to arrange the ways in which Harnakash will be killed. Vishnu sewed the power of wisdom and meditation within the mind of Praladh. Praladh was sent to school and was taught by Sanda Marka. He was overjoyed that he would be teaching a king's son and that he would be praised for this by Harnakash. He began by teaching the children to chant "Harnakash Maharaj Ki Jai!" All the pupils began to chant this, but Praladh remained silent. Sanda Markas's focus went on Praladh and he wandered why he was not praising his own father.

"O Praladh! Dear son! Chant Sri Harnakash's name," Sanda Marka said with great affection.

"Pundit Ji, Harnakash is the name of my father. How can I sing the praises of my own father's name?" was Praladh's response.

"I understand that is your father's name, but you are so fortunate to you have a father that meditated for so long and was granted a boon, where he killed thousands of deities. He has become immortal; no-one can kill him. It was his command that we all chant and sing the praises of "Sri Harnakash-Juleh Thuleh Harnakash!"

Praladh began to smile. "Ram Naam…Juleh Thuleh; the Lord- Ram exists within fire, wind…Bhagwan Ram. Pundit Ji! The Lord's protection is above the deities' head. My father has not won anything. Therefore, the Lord's name is the greatest."

Sanda Marka was moved by his words and had no response to give Praladh. He attempted to persuade Praladh but Praladh refused to accept anything he said. Praladh even began to cause the other pupils in the class to chant the Lord's name. This is the greatness of the Lord's name. Praladh became so disruptive that Sanda Marka became ever so frightened, he slapped Praladh. Praladh laughed and said "Pundit Ji! Whatever happens, Ram is Ram…no-one is greater than Ram-Ram will destroy all enemies and demons."

Sanda Marka ran away and went to Harnakash's kingdom. He fell at the feet of Harnakash and cried, "O Maharaj! I am in deep distress-your son refuses to chant your name, but he keeps chanting the Lord's name and has caused great upheaval in the school as well. All the pupils are chanting Ram!"

As soon as Harnakash heard the word 'Ram' he caused uproar, "This cannot be happening! No-one is allowed to chant or praise any other being apart from me! Anyone who does will not remain alive! I will…I will ask Praladh myself!"

All the servants of the palace became concerned as to what Harnakash will now do. Praladh was brought in front of his father. ""Praladh! Pundit Ji has complained that you have refused to chant my name!"

Praladh smiled: "O father! You are my father, how can I say your name? I am meant to respect you, not call you by your name."

Harnakash: "That is not the point!"

Praladh: "Well what else is it?"

Harnakash: "Do not chant the name of the Lord! You will chant my name…Harnakash…Harnakash! That is what you will chant on your rosary beads!"

Praladh began to laugh. "O father! This is your ego speaking. You meditated upon the Lord yourself and were granted a boon. The same Lord, who granted you the boon, is my Lord too."

"If you chant that name again, I will kill you!" Harnakash cried out aloud.

Praladh explained to his father that when he was in his mother's womb he was chanting 'Ram' and will continue doing so until his last breath. Harnakash had Praladh removed from the palace and ordered that Praladh was to be thrown in the river and be left to drown.

Praladh was taken to the river Sutlej. Praladh's hands and feet were tied and a heavy stone was also tied to his body so that he would sink. He was then thrown into the river. The Lord came down Himself and picked Praladh out of the river.

'Har Jug Jug Bhagat Upaidah, Pejh Rakhdha Ayaa Ram Rajeh.'

'In each and every age, He creates devotees and preserves their honour, O Lord King.'
(Guru Raam Daas Ji; GGSJ: Ang 451).

The servants looked over at the river bank and saw that Praladh was sitting there with his eyes closed and meditating upon the name of the Lord. There was no stone nor were there any ropes tied around him.

The servants saw this and ran back to the palace. "O Maharaj! He has not drowned…he keeps chanting Ram Ram."

Harnakash shouted at his servants and ordered them to throw him off a mountain. The following day Praladh was taken to the top of a mountain. Just as Praladh was about to be pushed over the edge, he shouted out 'Ram'. The wind blew so strongly that Praladh flew with the gust of the wind and landed on the ground like a bird. Suddenly, lightening struck and it struck the servants and killed them. Praladh made his way back to the palace. Harnakash got hold of Praladh and beat him, but with the grace of the Lord, Praladh felt no pain.

Praladh (53K)Harnakash's sister, Holka came and she was told to take Praladh to her bedroom and sit him in her laps. He informed her that he was going to kill Praladh by burning him alive. He put a boon over his sister that when he sets the room alit, she will not die or get burnt. Holka did as she was told. When the logs were set alight, Praladh began to laugh. As he carried on laughing the fire became more intense that Holka could not escape. After a few moments she was burnt alive and Praladh walked out alive.

Harnakash was at the end of his tether and was outraged by what had just happened. He then tied Praladh to an iron pillar. Harnakash: "Tell me who your saviour is?"

Praladh: "Ram is my saviour!"

Harnakash: "Where is He then?"

Praladh: "He is with me. He is always watching over me and protecting me from sinners like you. You will die soon!"

Narsingh (75K)Harnakash: "No, it will not be my death, but yours! Here comes the sword now!" On saying this, Harnakash drew his sword and went to strike Praladh.

Vishnu came in the form of a Narsingh (half man-half lion) out of the pillar. He grabbed Harnakash and ripped him into shreds. Vishnu exclaimed: "O egoistic Harnakash! Look, I didn't kill you in the day or at night. At this time the day is inside and outside, you were not killed on the earth, but you were picked up by my hands and were killed upon my knees!"

'Keenee Rakhiaa Bhuguth Prehilaadhai Harnaakhas Nukhei Bidhaarae.'

'He saved His devotee Praladh, and tore Harnaakhash with his nails.' (Guru Arjan Dev Ji; GGSJ: Ang 999)

Vishnu changed back to his original state and emancipated Praladh. All the deities above sang the praises of Praladh and showered flowers over this great saint.

Below is the story of Bhagat Prahlad as written by Bhai Gurdas Ji. Vaar 10, Pauri 2:

੨ : ਪ੍ਰਹਲਾਦ ਭਗਤ

ਘਰਿ ਹਰਣਾਖਸ ਦੈਤ ਦੇ ਕਲਰਿ ਕਵਲੁ ਭਗਤੁ ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦੁ।

Ghari Haranaakhas Dait Day Kalari Kavalu Bhagatu Prahilaadu.

घरि हरणाखस दैत दे कलरि कवलु भगतु प्रहिलादु ।

Prahlad, the saint, was born in the house of demon (king) Haranakhas like a lotus is born in the alkaline (barren) land.

ਪੜ੍ਹਨ ਪਠਾਇਆ ਚਾਟਸਾਲ ਪਾਂਧੈ ਚਿਤਿ ਹੋਆ ਅਹਿਲਾਦੁ।

Parhhan Patdaaiaa Chaatasaal Paandhay Chiti Hoaa Ahilaadu.

पड़्हन पठाइआ चाटसाल पांधे चिति होआ अहिलादु ।

When he was sent to seminary, the brahmin purohit became elated (because the king’s son was now his disciple).

ਸਿਮਰੈ ਮਨ ਵਿਚਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਗਾਵੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਅਨਾਹਦ ਨਾਦੁ।

Simarai Man Vichi Raam Naam Gaavai Sabadu Anaahadu Naadu.

सिमरै मन विचि राम नाम गावै सबदु अनाहदु नादु ।

Prahlad would remember the name of Ram in his heart and outwardly also he would eulogise the Lord.

ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਨਿ ਸਭ ਚਾਟੜੈ ਪਾਂਧੇ ਹੋਏ ਰਹੇ ਵਿਸਮਾਦੁ।

Bhagati Karani Sabh Chaatarhai Paandhay Hoi Rahay Visamaadu.

भगति करनि सभ चाटड़ै पांधे होइ रहे विसमादु ।

Now all the disciples became devotees of Lord, which was an awful and embarrassing situation for all the teachers.

ਰਾਜੇ ਪਾਸਿ ਰੂਆਇਆ ਦੋਖੀ ਦੈਤਿ ਵਧਾਇਆ ਵਾਦੁ।

Raajay Paasi Rooaaiaa Dokhee Daiti Vadhaaiaa Vaadu.

राजे पासि रूआइआ दोखी दैति वधाइआ वादु ।

The priest (teacher) reported or complained to the king (that O king your son has become devotee of God).

ਜਲ ਅਗਨੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਘਤਿਆ ਜਲੈ ਨ ਡੁਬੈ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ।

Jal Aganee Vichi Ghatiaa Jalai N Doubai Gur Parasaadi.

जल अगनी विचि घतिआ जलै न डुबै गुर परसादि ।

The malevolent demon picked up the quarrel. Prahlad was thrown into fire and water but with the grace of Guru (the Lord) neither he was burnt nor drowned.

ਕਢਿ ਖੜਗੁ ਸਦਿ ਪੁਛਿਆ ਕਉਣੁ ਸੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੈ ਉਸਤਾਦੁ।

Karhi Kharhagu Sadi Pouchhiaa Kaounu Su Tayraa Hai Ousataadu.

कड़ि खड़गु सदि पुछिआ कउणु सु तेरा है उसतादु ।

Angered as he was, Hiranyaksyapu took out his double-edged sword and asked Prahlad who his Guru (Lord) was.

ਥੰਮ੍ਹੁ ਪਾੜਿ ਪਰਗਟਿਆ ਨਰਸਿੰਘ ਰੂਪ ਅਨੂਪ ਅਨਾਦਿ।

Danmh Paarhi Paragatiaa Narasingh Roop Anoop Anaadi.

थंम्ह पाड़ि परगटिआ नरसिंघ रूप अनूप अनादि ।

At the same moment Lord God in the form of man-lion came out of pillar. His form was grand and majestic.

ਬੇਮੁਖ ਪਕੜਿ ਪਛਾੜਿਅਨੁ ਸੰਤ ਸਹਾਈ ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ।

Baymakh Pakarhi Pachhaarhianu Sant Sahaaee Aadi Jougaadi.

बेमख पकड़ि पछाड़िअनु संत सहाई आदि जुगादि ।

That wicked demon was thrown down and killed and thus it was proved that the Lord is kind to devotees since the time immemorial.

ਜੈ ਜੈ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਨ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾਦਿ॥੨॥

Jai Jai Kaar Karani Brahamaadi ॥2॥

जै जै कार करनि ब्रहमादि ॥२॥

Seeing this Brahma and other gods started eulogising the Lord.
